Best time to visit

January – March

Traveling to Japan between January and March offers a unique blend of winter landscapes, cultural experiences, and seasonal festivities. In January, you can witness the New Year celebrations, visit temples for hatsumode (first shrine visit of the year), and enjoy the Sapporo Snow Festival in early February, featuring breathtaking ice sculptures. Skiing enthusiasts can head to Hokkaido or Nagano for world-class slopes, while cherry blossoms start blooming in Okinawa by late February. March brings plum blossoms and the first signs of sakura, creating picturesque scenery. Fewer crowds, crisp air, and seasonal delicacies like strawberries and hotpot dishes enhance the experience.

April – June

April to June is one of the best times to visit Japan, as the country bursts into life with beautiful spring and early summer scenes. April is the peak of cherry blossom season, with iconic spots like Kyoto, Tokyo, and Hiroshima offering breathtaking views of sakura in full bloom. In May, Japan celebrates Golden Week, a time of national holidays filled with festivals and parades. By June, the early summer brings lush green landscapes and the start of the rainy season, which adds a serene, misty atmosphere to the country’s temples and gardens. It’s an ideal time for outdoor activities and cultural exploration.

July – September

From July to September, Japan experiences summer, with July bringing warm temperatures and vibrant festivals like Tanabata and the famous Gion Matsuri in Kyoto. The Okinawa Islands are perfect for beach lovers seeking tropical weather. August sees the peak of summer heat, but also the breathtaking Obon Festival, where people honor their ancestors through traditional dances and ceremonies. As September approaches, the weather begins to cool slightly, but there’s still plenty of summer energy in the air. It’s also the start of the typhoon season, so it’s important to be prepared for occasional storms, especially on the coast.

October – December

From September to December, Japan transitions from the warmth of summer into the cool beauty of autumn and winter. September marks the tail end of the typhoon season, but it’s still a good time to visit, especially with fewer tourists. As the weather cools, October brings stunning fall colors, particularly in places like Kyoto and the Japanese Alps, making it perfect for outdoor exploration. November is prime time for foliage, with parks and temples offering breathtaking views. By December, the festive season begins, with Christmas lights and traditional New Year’s preparations filling the streets. It’s a wonderful time for culture, nature, and seasonal charm.
