Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

Thanks to some very special residents, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge will have you wondering whether you’re in Florida or Kenya.

You can wake up to a scene straight out of The Lion King when you stay here. The hotel’s built around a 43-acre savannah, so you can sit on your balcony and watch gazelles, giraffes, and zebras grazing, safari-style. The African theme doesn’t stop with the animals. Walk into the three-storey lobby and you’re met with dark-wood floors, carved furniture and tribal art. It’s more of the same in the bedrooms, too. Many rooms overlook the beautiful savannas, from which you can spot grazing zebra, giraffes and gazelles roaming free in natural environments. The hotel offers a wide range of activities honouring these animals, aimed at every age range. Go on a cultural safari, see animals play at dusk, with the benefit of night vision, and watch handlers feed pelicans and flamingos.

You’ve got two watering hole-esque swimming pools, each with a slide and a neighbouring bar. There’s a big splash play area for children, and a hotel-run kids’ club. Dining options include a place with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the savannah, and eateries with menus that mix African and American flavours. A couple of cocktail bars finish the bill. When the sun sets, you can make friends around an old-fashioned campfire. For drinks, there’s the Victoria Falls Lounge*, which is set over a waterfall like its namesake, or the Cape Town Lounge and Wine Bar*.

The Disney Parks are easy to get to – just hop on one of the shuttle buses. Back at the hotel, there’s a games arcade* and a playground, plus have-a-go drumming and singing sessions in the lobby. Pick up one of the hotel’s wildlife-spotting guides, and you can start ticking off different species in the surrounding savannah. As well as the giraffes and zebras, there are African flamingos, white-bearded wildebeest and impala.
