Kurumba offers luxury at great value, with a convenient location and superb hospitality.

Kurumba was the very first Maldivian resort to open its ‘doors’, back in 1972. Its history and traditional style are evident but this compact village-like island also offers a host of more contemporary facilities.

The choice of dining is superb – there’s a restaurant for every night of the week with a poolside café to spare. And the quality is excellent. It begins with the main restaurant, Vihamanaa, which serves up buffet dishes from hearty Italian to fiery curries. Of the seven speciality restaurants, Italian fine dining is perfectly executed at Isola, while Al Qasr (‘the Palace’) lives up to its name with decadent surrounds and delicious Middle Eastern flavours. And then there’s Thila, which extends out over the water – this is the gourmet breakfast venue for higher room types and a great spot for seafood dinners.

Snorkelling on the house reef is just steps from the beach and diving packages are available to pre-book. Rooms sit in clusters around the network of paths, with traditional exteriors and more modern furnishings. Superior Rooms are in two-storey buildings with views of the coconut groves. For direct beach views, opt for a Beachfront Deluxe Bungalow. There’s also a range of spacious villas with private pools, ideal for a more secluded stay.

2 pools, children’s pool, kids’ club, spa*, 24-hour gym, 2 tennis courts, multipurpose court, watersports*, diving centre*, Majaa recreation centre, nightly entertainment

Restaurants & bars

Take a deep breath – there’s a lot of choice here. The new-look Vihamanaa is the main restaurant with buffet style dining. Sample freshly baked bread, omelettes and fresh fruit at breakfast, while two live cooking stations serve up everything from Indian to Italian dishes at dinner.

Thila is the contemporary breakfast venue for Beachfront Deluxe Bungalows and above – start the day as you mean to go on with a glass of sparkling wine, crêpes and eggs any way. By night, indulge on gourmet seafood at the ocean’s edge.

The Hamakaze is housed in an overwater pavilion and serves mouthwatering sushi, sashimi and sizzling teppanyaki. The Middle Eastern restaurant, Al Qasr (‘the Palace’), lives up to its name, with a stately setting and the finest mezze and grilled meats.

Authenticity is the order of the day at the glittering Mahal, serving thali and curries from the Royal Kitchens of India, and Isola is a fine dining Italian delight conjuring up hearty dishes from its modern menu. Khing Thai offers a blend of sweet and savoury flavours with aromatic spices that define traditional Thai cuisine.

For daytime dining – or if you can resist the temptations of the other restaurants and simply want a light bite in the evening – the Café is a relaxed al fresco venue by the pool. It also serves to-die-for ice-creams with traditional favourites as well as more creative flavours.

For drinks, head to the breezy Kandu Bar‘s overwater deck, the atmospheric Fez Lounge for mezze and flavoured shisha, or on-the-beach Athiri Bar.

Not all of the restaurants are open every day, so it’s worth checking in advance if you want to sample them all.

Children’s club

Majaa Kids’ Club keeps the youngest guests entertained at Kurumba, with exciting games and educational activities with a Maldivian twist. It’s open for children age 4 to 13 from 9am-6pm daily. Children under 4 can attend with a parent, guardian or pre-arranged babysitter. Activities include snorkelling lessons*, pizza making, arts and crafts and sports. Indoors, they can try their hands at painting classes, puzzles, movies, foosball and lots more. Majaa is Maldivian for fun!

For Children

What’s nearby? This resort is in the North Malé Atoll. The airport island of Malé is only a 10-minute boat ride away, and if you book the Dine-Around All Inclusive option you get a tour of Malé island – or a snorkelling safari – included in your stay. If you just fancy getting out and exploring the water around the island, there are free kayaks available at the resort.

Tried and tested There are a few standout experiences you can pay extra for, and they’re ideal for families with older children. For example, you can take a boat trip out to a remote sandbank and sit down to a freshly prepared picnic*, or you can head out to a nearby island for a taste of local life*. There’s also lots on offer here for teens who are too old for the kids’ club, from PlayStation pods to Zumba and yoga classes.

The sleeping arrangements The Family Villas at Kurumba are fantastic. Set over two levels, they each have a terrace, a plunge pool and their very own wine cellar. Plus, if you book one of these you get premium breakfast at Thila restaurant as well as cocktails from 5-6pm at Kandu Bar. The Garden Pool Villas are a great option for smaller families as children can sleep in the sitting room area, which is separated from the main bedroom by sliding doors.
