Recently opened after a luxury refurbishment, the new-look Maafushivaru is an architectural gem with a small island charm.

Just 350m in length, Maafushivaru is small and romantic, with two wide beaches and a glorious lagoon. Theres a house reef for snorkelling and if you board one of the dive centres boat trips theres a great chance of spotting turtles, manta rays and whale sharks nearby. An infinity pool is perfectly placed on the beachfront, next to the bar with comfy chic sofas for lounging. Maafushivarus secret delight is the beautiful neighbouring sister island, Lonubo (currently closed due to COVID-19 restrictions). For an authentic Crusoe-esque experience, head over to the pint-sized islet for snorkelling and lounging in the sun.

The main buffet restaurant is the Cuisine Gallery, which offers Mediterranean cuisine infused with local flavours. There are a few new dining options: Moodhu Grill, where meat and seafood are served on the beach, Oishii which offers an overwater teppanyaki experience, and Sea Spirit that opens for lighter lunchtime bites.

The villas are stylish with Maldivian touches. Refurbished Beach Villas are just steps from the beach with a semi open-air bathroom. Light and airy Water Villas sit on stilts over the lagoon, with floor-to-ceiling windows and direct access to the water. Beautiful new Beach Pool Villas and Water Pool Villas will have their own plunge pool on the private deck.

TheCuisine Galleryserves breakfast with a wide choice of dishes, plus Mediterranean and Asian buffets for dinner. Set on the edge of the beach,Moodhu Grillis the signature restaurant and offers premium meats, seafood and dishes from its tandoor oven. For teppanyaki dining, head to the overwaterUmirestaurant and enjoy a theatrical dinner.

TheOcean Caf(above the Water Bar) serves pizzas, pastas, burgers and salads during the day, with a contemporary western menu for dinner, while poolsideLas Tapasoffers salads and tapas-style bites for lunch. Theres also theLibrary Loungecoffee shop for hot drinks and light lunches. For drinks, theWater Baris a great spot to chill out by the pool.

As well as the exclusiveprivate dining packagesonLonubo (currently closed due to COVID-19 restrictions), it’s also possible to dine here with others guests. This is offered a couple of times each week (unless the island is privately booked) and is at extra cost. It’s an excellent cost-effective way to experience Lonubo without hiring the island privately.

Diving

Maafushivaru Diving School is a fully equipped PADI dive centre with multi-lingual instructors offering a wide range of underwater adventures, and catering for all levels from beginners to experienced divers. There are morning and afternoon dives from a Maldivian dhoni. Night dives, half day and full day trips to sites further afield are organised regularly. PADI certification courses are also available.

Surrounded by vegetation and right beside the beach, with a private deck facing the sea. The bathroom is semi-open-air with a shower, and the garden has a rainfall shower.

Water Villa

Overwater villas with modern comforts and stunning lagoon views of the lagoon. The spacious bedroom features a king-size bed and day bed, the bathroom has a rainfall shower and a bathtub with ocean views, and theres a deck with steps down into the ocean.

Beach Pool Villa

On the beach, just steps away from the ocean, these villas have a king-size bed, a large bathroom with a bathtub, twin sinks and separate indoor and outdoor showers. The large outdoor deck has a day bed, dining area and private pool.

Duplex Pool Villa

Duplex Pool Villas are ideal for couples or small families. Upstairs has a spacious bedroom with king-size bed, a bathroom with rainfall shower, and a balcony. Downstairs theres a spacious living area (which can be converted to an extra bedroom), a garden bathroom with freestanding bathtub and rainfall shower. The outdoor deck has a day bed, dining area and private pool.

Water Pool Villa

Set overwater with all modern comforts, these villas have a spacious bedroom and stunning views of the lagoon. The bathroom has a freestanding bathtub, twin sinks and rainfall shower. Outside, the private deck has a pool and steps down into the ocean.
