Overview

Madeira, though small, offers a stunning mix of lush gardens, spectacular coastlines, jagged peaks, and the charming town of Funchal, which is rich in maritime history and architectural beauty. Located 600 miles southwest of Lisbon, Madeira’s mountainous landscape is a haven for nature lovers. Its mild subtropical climate allows for an impressive diversity of flora, making it an all-year-round destination. The island’s volcanic soil is ideal for crops like bananas, grapes, and sugar cane, while the food scene features delicious seafood and local specialties like espetada (beef skewers) and bolo de mel (honey cake).

Madeira was accidentally discovered in 1418 by João Gonçalves Zarco, and it has since been an agricultural and cultural treasure trove. The island is known for its indigenous Laurisilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its legendary wines, with the fortified Madeira wine being a notable export. From thundering waterfalls to mountain peaks, there’s much to explore, and the tour begins in the captivating capital city of Funchal.
