The delicate scent of spices, the sound of temple bells, and a rich tapestry of ancient arts and crafts all characterize Tamil Nadu and Kerala. This journey travels through hill stations, tropical backwaters, and temple-laden towns, while staying in some of the region’s finest hotels.

Itinerary

Day 1: Fly to Chennai
Fly from London (regional connections available) to Chennai (Madras) with British Airways. (N)

Day 2: Chennai
On arrival, transfer to the Hyatt Regency (or similar) for 1 night (early check-in available). Spend the morning at leisure before an afternoon city tour, followed by free time at Marina Beach. (B)

Day 3: Mahabalipuram – Puducherry
Take a morning walking tour of Mylapore, a town that predates Chennai by 2,000 years. Continue to Puducherry (Pondicherry), stopping en route to visit the UNESCO-listed Shore Temples at Mahabalipuram. Stay 2 nights at Palais de Mahé, located in the heart of the French Quarter. (B)

Day 4: Puducherry
Visit a local rural village, organized by the Mohanam Cultural Centre, where artisans practice traditional crafts such as stone carving, ceramics, and terracotta work. In the afternoon, take a guided walk through Puducherry, visiting the Aurobindo Ashram, the lively Tamil Quarters, and the Ganesh Temple in the evening. (B)

Day 5: Chidambaram – Kumbakonam
Witness the daily rituals at Chidambaram Temple before observing sari weaving in Thribhuvanam. Drive through scenic countryside to Kumbakonam, staying 2 nights at Mantra Koodam. In the evening, enjoy a pottery session and an interactive culinary demonstration led by expert chefs. (B, D)

Day 6: Kumbakonam
Explore the crafts and culture of Tamil Nadu. Watch master foundrymen create detailed bronze statues, witness pattu silk weaving on traditional wooden looms, and try your hand at making kolams, intricate patterns displayed outside homes. Visit one of Asia’s largest vegetable markets and the Darasuram Temple, famous for its delicate stone sculptures. The Vedic School, dating back 140 years, is also worth a visit. Afternoon at leisure or opt for a cycle ride into the countryside. (B, D)

Day 7: Tanjore – Chettinad
Drive to Chettinad, stopping en route at the Brihadeeswarar Temple in Tanjore, known for its remarkable frescoes. Visit the art gallery and Saraswathi Mahal Library at Tanjore Palace. Arrive in Chettinad for an overnight stay at Chidambara Vilas, where you’ll enjoy a superb culinary experience. (B, L, D)

Day 8: Madurai
Explore the village market in the morning, stopping for a traditional cup of tea, before visiting Chettinad’s impressive mansions. Travel to Madurai and visit the Meenakshi Temple and Hall of a Thousand Pillars in the evening for the night ceremony. Overnight stay at Heritage Madurai. (B)

Day 9: Munnar
Travel to the hill country of Munnar for an overnight stay at Fragrant Nature. Along the way, visit a tea factory for a tea tasting and a guided plantation walk. (B, D)

Day 10: Kumarakom
Morning at leisure or visit the Srishti Welfare Centre, which trains disabled children in creating handmade products. Continue to Kumarakom, staying 2 nights at Kumarakom Lake Resort (meandering pool villa) with views of Lake Vembanad. (B, D)

Day 11: Kumarakom
Enjoy a day at leisure to soak in the beautiful surroundings or explore village life in the backwaters. (B, D)

Day 12: Kochi
Take a morning shikara (wooden boat) cruise through the backwaters before driving to Kochi (Cochin). Visit Mattancherry Palace and enjoy an evening Kathakali dance performance. Stay 2 nights at Eighth Bastion. (B)

Day 13: Kochi
Morning sightseeing tour of Kochi, including the iconic Chinese fishing nets and the 16th-century St. Francis Church. Explore hidden Jew Town and visit dhobi wallah, a washhouse where white hotel linens and clothing are beaten against washing stones. Afternoon at leisure to wander through local markets. (B)
