City Breaks in Madrid
Madrid is the capital of Spain and a cultural hub, where you can dine in Michelin star restaurants, visit an astonishing range of attractions and enjoy vibrant street life at any time of the day or night. Get involved as much or as little as you want, by putting on your dancing shoes, or by simply soaking up the lively atmosphere over a cold beer in a picturesque plaza.
The temperature in Madrid is year-round perfect, for a warm and relaxing holiday, so we thought we’d have a look at the sort of experiences you can have, here in the heart of the Iberian Peninsular. A few of our trusted travel partners offer breaks to Madrid, but we can heartily recommend Travelspheres 4 day break, or Collettes longer 6 day experience of the city.
Relaxing in Spain
The city’s plazas are usually crowded, friendly, sociable spaces where you can meet up with friends to enjoy a light lunch or a glass of wine, as you watch the world walk past. The Plaza Mayor is the biggest square in Madrid and it’s where the local tourist office can be found, which makes it a great place to begin your exploration of the Spanish capital. Although currently it’s used as a meeting point, the Plaza Mayor has played host to bullfights, football games and even public executions; during the time of the Spanish Inquisition.
Another beautiful square is the Plaza de Coln, which is dedicated to Christopher Columbus. Here you’ll find a large statue of the man himself, some impressive fountains, a garden and an enormous Spanish flag. It’s a great place to sit and soak up the sun.
If you’re looking for somewhere greener, however, why not head to Retiro Park? Wander around Andalucian style gardens, taking in the scent of the roses and marvel at Spain’s oldest cypress tree, which is over 400 years old. The glass palace is the name of the botanical gardens here and theyre well worth a visit.
Cultural attractions in Madrid
The Royal Palace, the Aranjuez Palace and the enormous Gothic Almudena Cathedral are the big names in Madrids cultural heritage, but a lot of visitors to the city head straight for the incredible art galleries. The Museo del Prado is the National Gallery, famously containing Velazquez’s Las Meninas, as well as artworks by Goya and El Greco. However, if youd like to set eyes upon one of the most infamous works of the 20th century then Picasso’s Guernica can be found in the Modern Arts Reina Sofia Museum.
Family entertainment
For exhilarating rides, you’ll want to head over to the rollercoasters of the Casa de Campo theme park, but a great day out can also be had at the Faunia zoo and zoo aquarium. There are also two water parks to choose from, with various pools and slides. A tour of the Santiago Bernabeau stadium, the home ground of Real Madrid, will be a thrill for any budding young footballers, or fans of the beautiful game.
Eating out in Madrid
Finding great food in Madrid is not difficult. The much celebrated DiverXo has a coveted 3 Michelin stars, while market produce champion, Santceloni and the avant-garde La Terraza del Casino, both have 2 stars. If posh nosh is not your priority however, you can find plenty of lower and mid- range priced meals, that will cater for all requirements. Some of the very established, more traditional restaurants, which serve local recipes are a real treat.
