With Corfu back on our TV screens thanks to the recent launch of the adaptation of Gerald Durrell’s book My Family and Other Animals, there is a renewed interest in travelling to Corfu and seeing the locations that inspired the novel.. We here at Low Cost Deals thought we would introduce you to three great ways to visit Corfu.
Greek Island Cruise by Great Rail Journeys
Discover Venice, Mykonos, Santorini, Olympia and Corfu with this luxury cruise. On day 5 you’ll disembark in Corfu and have the chance to stroll around the island, experiencing the sights at your leisure, taking in the opulent harbour area, grand mansions and cobbled streets. There are a couple of art galleries which are well worth a visit; the Palace of St Michael and St George, which houses an impressive collection of Asian art and the Municipal art gallery whose paintings focus on Italian influences.
Or, if you prefer, can take part in an organised tour of the Venetian Fortress, which overlooks the town. Whichever you choose, be sure to leave enough time in your day to sit at a pavement cafe, with the sun on your face and try local delicacy sikomaida, a combination of dried figs and nuts which is served with coffee. This is a day trip only and you will return to your state of the art cruise ship following your day in Corfu.
Secrets of Greece including Corfu by Trafalgar
This trip takes in many highlights of Greece and includes an overnight stay in Corfu. You will visit the Venetian Castle, the monastery of Palaiokastritsa and the Achilleion Palace. There will, of course be time to explore the island at your leisure as well, so you could spend a few hours on the beach, shopping or simply acquainting yourself with the difference in architecture between the churches of the old town and the modern buildings of the new town.
Italian Lakes with Greek Islands Cruise by Titan Tours
This has got to be one of the most enjoyable ways to explore both Greece and Italy. You’ll visit Venice, Verona and Lake Maggiore as well as Corfu, as part of the Greek cruise. Your day trip in Corfu will include a visit to the Byzantine Museum, a walk along the Esplanade and an afternoon in Corfu Town. If you’re feeling adventurous, why not take a bus over to Mon Repos Estate and explore the gardens of the Museum of Palaeopolis. The Queens husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, was born on this estate. You’ll also discover the ruins of two Doric temples here. Buses run from Corfu Town to this estate on the outskirts every 20 minutes. Or, if you’d like to find the Strawberry Pink Villa, where the Durrell family lived in the 1930s, you’ll need to head over to the Perama suburbs to the south of Corfu Town.
