Overview
Our journey through France takes us along the beautiful Saône and Rhône rivers, which have been the preferred routes for traders and invaders since the dawn of recorded history. Everywhere we look, there are reminders of the Romans and the greatest empire of the ancient world. We will enjoy guided tours of Lyon and Beaune, including a visit to the Hôtel-Dieu.
In Vienne, we will sample the wines of the Rhône Valley at Tain l’Hermitage. You will be amazed by the engineering brilliance of the amphitheater in Arles and the impressive aqueduct at the Pont du Gard. Avignon served as the seat of the Papacy during medieval times, marking a century of greatness highlighted by the fascinating Papal Palace and its Renaissance art collection.
All of this is set against the backdrop of some of France’s stunning natural beauty, such as the sheer limestone cliffs of the Ardèche Gorges. It’s no wonder that Van Gogh created some of his greatest works in Provence!

Lyon to Avignon River Cruise Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival in Lyon
Your journey begins as you board the luxurious five-star ship in Lyon, one of France’s most vibrant cities, where you will be welcomed aboard. Settle in, and prepare to embark on an unforgettable adventure through the scenic landscapes and historical treasures of France.
Day 2 – Lyon
This morning, enjoy a guided tour of Lyon, a UNESCO World Heritage city famous for its medieval and Renaissance architecture. Explore the beautiful Place Bellecour, Europe’s largest pedestrian square, and admire its statue of Louis XIV. You will also visit Lyon’s impressive churches and the historic buildings that make this city so special. In the afternoon, we begin our cruise along the Saône River heading north, enjoying the picturesque French countryside from the comfort of your ship.
Day 3 – Beaune
After waking up in Chalon, enjoy a scenic drive through the charming villages of Burgundy to Beaune. Here, you will take a guided tour of the renowned Hôtel-Dieu, a former charitable almshouse and an architectural gem. The Hôtel-Dieu is a beautiful example of 15th-century Gothic architecture and is known for its stunning painted roof and impressive collection of medieval artwork. Afterward, you will return to the ship for lunch, and continue cruising.
Day 4 – Vienne & Tain l’Hermitage
Today, we will explore Vienne, a town with a rich Roman history. Stroll through its ancient streets and admire its well-preserved buildings, including a Roman theater and temples. Later, we sail through the breathtaking Rhône Valley, passing picturesque vineyards and quaint villages on our way to Tain l’Hermitage. Here, you’ll enjoy a wine-tasting experience, sampling some of the region’s finest wines.
Day 5 – Ardèche Gorges
This morning, we cruise downstream through the stunning Ardèche Gorges, one of France’s most spectacular natural landscapes. The winding river is flanked by towering limestone cliffs, creating a dramatic and scenic vista. During your tour, you’ll marvel at the beauty of this area and its rugged, untouched nature. The Ardèche Gorges are an incredible place to take in the natural wonders of southern France.
Day 6 – Arles & Pont du Gard
In Arles, you can take a guided tour of this ancient Roman city, known for its preserved ruins and as the home of the famous painter Vincent van Gogh. You can also choose to explore the inspiration behind Van Gogh’s work, with a visit to locations that inspired some of his most famous pieces. Later, we visit the incredible Pont du Gard, a Roman aqueduct that is one of the most well-preserved ancient monuments in France. This engineering marvel spans the Gardon River and offers a fascinating glimpse into Roman ingenuity.
Day 7 – Avignon
On your last full day of exploration, you’ll take a guided tour of Avignon, once the seat of the Papacy in the 14th century. The highlight of your visit is the Palace of the Popes, a grand medieval structure filled with Renaissance art and ornate architecture. You can also opt for a scenic petit train tour of the city or enjoy some free time to wander and discover the local shops and cafes. Avignon is a city full of history and beauty, offering a perfect conclusion to your French adventure.
Day 8 – Return Home
After breakfast, it’s time to say farewell to your crew and fellow travelers. You will be transferred to the airport or train station for your return journey home, filled with wonderful memories of a spectacular cruise through some of France’s most picturesque regions.
