Colognes Christmas Markets
Enjoy the wonderfully festive atmosphere of Christmas time in
Cologne over the next two days. The city is Europe’s unofficial
‘Christmas Market capital’, with five Christmas Markets each
boasting its own unique character. Festive chalets offer a special
selection of gifts, decorations, arts and crafts as well as
traditional stalls selling sausages, waffles, wine and beer. Visit
the Maritime Market next to the Rhine and the city’s Chocolate
Museum, the market at Rudolfplatz, held at the Hahnentor city gate,
or the market in Roncalliplatz beneath the cathedral, which has the
biggest Christmas tree in the Rhineland. A short wander through the
Old Town’s narrow alleys and squares leads you to the Christmas
Market at the Alter Markt, and you can also stroll around Neumarkt
which hosts the oldest Christmas Market in Cologne, now themed as
the ‘Market of Angels’. Cologne Cathedral, located just outside the
main station, is also a wonderful sight, especially at this time of
year. One of Europe’s most premier examples of its kind, the mighty
spires looming up high prove this to be a truly awe-inspiring
landmark.
